The space for your yoga practice should be serene and clean. You might want to decorate it with some pictures and other objects that help you feel peaceful.

You should first buy a yoga sticky mat. You can buy a yoga mat for just about any budget. We also recommend that you buy a cleaner for your mat to keep it smelling fresh and clean. You will want to have 2 blocks and a strap for modifications of yoga poses. You also may want to buy a yoga blanket. This will make you stay warm when you are relaxing in savasans. You also can roll it up to assist in modify poses. You might want to get two bolsters for under your knees.

Keep your yoga space free of any objects such as furniture or toys that might injure you. You should try to do yoga on a hard floor. If you are on carpet, it can flex and it makes it harder to balance. You also can purchase a lifeboard, which is a hard surface you can put over your carpeting.

4. Select Your Style of Yoga

There are very many sorts of yoga you can choose. Instead of getting overwhelmed, you should get excited! You can always try a variety of different style of yoga until you find one that you like. Hatha yoga is most common, but there are many schools of this type of yoga. A good style for a beginner is Iyengar or Kripalu yoga.

If you are not able to get an instructor or can’t afford one, you should buy some books on yoga or flash cards. These can be very helpful as a reference as you are learning about the finer points of many poses.

The Internet is a great resource to learn more about yoga. You can use iTunes to locate a good podcast on yoga that works for you. Also, consider buying a membership to a yoga club online. One is the Gaiam Yoga club. Another is Yoga Glo.

6. Take Your Yoga on the Road

Even if you are not home at the moment, you can continue with your yoga practice. You can take most of your yoga tools with you if you are traveling for business and use them in your hotel room. Or, you can do some of your yoga outdoors when you are on vacation in the woods or on the beach.

7. Go Easy At First

Start off by doing yoga for only 10 minutes or so. You should start very slowly when beginning a new practice of yoga.

8. Use Music

Using music during your practice can make it much more enjoyable. You might think about buying ipod speakers and integrate your ipod into your practice of yoga. You can collect various types of music to help you enjoy a wonderful yoga experience.

9. Remember to Meditate

The main idea behind yoga is meditation, not fitness. Don’t forget to take a few minutes after your yoga to meditate. Relax your mind as you are working to relax your body. You can try something very easy, such as sit up straight, close your eyes and focus deeply on your breathing. Meditation will improve your overall mood, reduce stress and blood pressure.
